Kat is a girl who like to do things her own way Like coloring inside the lines or telling her secrets to trees instead of a friend It s not that she doesn t want a friend, she s just too shy to talk to anyone and come out of her shell Of course, that makes for a lonely Kat But when her birthday rolls around, she knows it will be the best ever because that s the day Kat s best friend will arrive so, Kat and Juju are instant best friends. But wait Juju, it turns out, has his own way of doing things Like coloring outside the lines and being silly and laughing loudly Juju is fearless and, unlike Kat who is afraid of what the the other kids wonder about her, he didn t care what anyone thinks about him Juju likes to let go and do a happy dance, and if everyone laughed, so what He tries so hard to teach Kat to be brave, but she still worries about what other people would think about her, including Juju Then one day, something unexpected stops both Kat and Juju in their tracks Could this helpless baby bird be just what Kat needs to help her come out of her shell, to stop thinking about herself and to care for it Kat and Juju is a charming story with an important message for kids it s okay to be different, it s okay to be an introvert, and it doesn t mean the other kids won t like you And by taking care of the baby bird she and Juju find, Kat learns how to provide the bird with the same kind of support and confidence that Juju was trying to give her and that friends would also give It s amazing how much personal growth Kat experiences in this sensitive picture book The author studied animation and that really shows in the illustrations From the large orange Juju to the big bow in Kat s hair, and the three diverse friends, there is whimsy and humor throughout, despite the seriousness of the message I had one small problem with Kat and Juju I just wasn t sure what Juju is supposed to be a large stuffed toy An imaginary playmate Any ideas I have to be honest about this my younger readers didn t question this the way I did They seemed ok with just accepting that Juju showed up at Kat s door on her birthday And they loved the story We read it over Zoom and I can t wait to share it with them in person. This book is recommended for readers age 4 This book was gratefully received from Barbara Fisch at Blue Slip Media Hello, friends Our book today is Kat And Juju by lonely, despite being too shy to be herself around the other kids That s why she s looking forward to her birthday this is the year that she gets her very best friend , an anthropomorphic animal companion The other children have gotten theirs, and Kat is eager to meet her own Yet when Juju, a giant, fluffy red bird arrives on her doorstep, Kat is unsure Juju is different than her in so many ways he s outgoing, adventurous, and seemingly unafraid of anything Kat wonders if Juju will grow tired of her but an unexpected series of events may show her that she doesn t have to stop being herself to find her inner courage.Very cute While the pacing of this gentle coming of age story can occasionally feel uneven, its message is pure true friends will appreciate you for who you are, even if they themselves are different There s also a nice theme of personal growth through caring for an injured baby bird together, Kat begins to try new and adventurous things at her own pace, with Juju s support and encouragement The wide eyed characters are adorable, from Kat s oversized hairbow ears to the unbelievably endearing design of Juju The length was great, and JJ loved it A few rough edges, but overall a warm tale of friendship and self assurance, and it s Baby Bookworm approved Note A copy of this book was provided to The Baby Bookworm by a representative of the author in world Some children might be upset when such a friend doesn t show up, so it s certainly only aimed at kids who understand that fiction is pretend It s interesting in that what makes the character different is that she colors in the lines, finds beauty where others don t look, and can appreciate nature I could relate to Kat in that I ve shared secrets with trees It s very well drawn and fun to look at, especially if you like the color orange which I do The main character does change in the book She overcomes shyness, which defeats her loneliness This happens because she helps someone else, a minor character It would be important to remind children not to touch baby birds, especially without the help of a qualified adult It s often easier to help others than to help yourself In fact, we often learn to help ourselves by way of helping others That s the primary lesson of this book The secondary lesson is that shyness needs to be overcome to make friends and end loneliness Kat is a sweet girl who does things a little differently than the other kids She likes to color inside the lines She is perceptive and likes to tell her deepest secrets to her favorite tree instead of jumping rope or playing with friends But, sometimes she gets lonely. On her birthday, she waits for her special visitor, a bird named Juju Juju helps Kat see the world in a whole new way, helping Kat be brave helped her see that she didn t have to worry about what everyone else thought and did her very own happy dance.I really loved the color scheme in this book The pages pop with simplistic yet bold illustrations I also love the diverse characters in Kat s friendship circle including a redheaded boy and a black girl All the kids have their own special friend like a tiger, a goldfish, and a bear and Kat couldn t wait to find out who her friend would be.I love that this book highlights kids who tend to beintroverted But, for a picture book, I think the theme is a bitadvanced for kids to understand I would read and discuss it with six or seven year olds who have hadexposure to feelings of loneliness or feeling awkward or different. The author had the sweetest dedication which I am sure is what inspired this story She dedicated this book to her own Juju bird and her kind mother who allowed her to draw on the walls Be sure to check out the author s biography below The artwork in this
